( Posted with Michael's permission)
Michael's surgery went well. We were kind of pessimistic that it was going to actually happen there for awhile but it all worked out in the end. We arrived at the surgical center at nine AM like instructed and were taken to pre op within fifteen minutes. We answered many questions, while Michael got into a gown and they put in an IV line. At about nine thirty we were just setting back in pre op waiting. Waiting and watching cartoon network, waiting some more . At ten AM( Michael's scheduled surgery time) the doctor came in. Unfortunately he didn't come to our section, he went to the lady in the next section. Here he was behind and we were after her. After he left she told us that her surgery was expected to take an hour. Michael was growing restless and asked one of the nurses if Nanny could come back with us. Since this nurse knew us from church and Understood Michael's situation she allowed his request. At eleven thirty Pops came in. He had jury duty and didn't think that he would make it but the defendant decided to plea guilty for the case he was assigned so he was free. Michael was thrilled that Pops was there . Soon it was noon. Michael started looking uncomfortable. Then he got down right fidgety. We asked what was wrong and he said he itched all over. Upon inspection he had a bumpy rash all over him. I was sure that this would threaten his surgery as we called a nurse. The nurse called a doctor who called two more doctors. The doctors called an anesthesiologist. I stood there as they all looked and pointed. Nanny ands Pops retreated to the waiting room when one doctor spoke to Mike and I . We think it is an allergy to our laundry detergent he said. Another doctor went to get a surgical (sterile) gown. They took the blanket away and the rash started to go away. The doctor never did come back with the gown but it was twenty till one and the surgical nurse came to get Michael. Problem number two occurred when this nurse asked for the crutches that the doctor's office gave us to bring. Gave us? We asked. The doctor came in and asked Mike if he would go to the office and get a pair since the staff neglected to give us any. He did and I went to the waiting room where a staff member offered me a variety of snack foods as well as free, coffee, tea ,cappuccino, hot chocolate,or select Coca cola products. Mike soon returned with Michael's crutches and a bag of McDonald's double cheeseburgers ( no onion for me ) . The surgery took a little over an hour and a half and then the surgeon came out. A half hour later , we were called to recovery.
Upon entering recovery I seen Michael was blotchy again. I pulled the blanket off and he was still in the same gown. the post op nurse said she gave him Benedryl but she didn't want to give him too much so he wouldn't wake up. I told her to get his discharge papers and that I would take him home and give him Benedryl here. Mike helped him to get dressed and we were on our way. Once home the blotchy rash went away after a dose of Benedryl. They just didn't give him enough in addition to not removing the offending fabric.
We are doing a lot better now. We just keep the Vicoden coming every four hours and limit the time off the couch to bathroom breaks and eating Michael seems pretty comfortable. Of course it helps that he has two new X Box games in addition to the hundred and some that he previously had to occupy his time. His school has also been helpful in sending home a weeks work for him to stay busy with.(By The Way... He wishes to thank them )
