May God Bless Clancy , Clarissa, Isabella, Ignatius, Masamora, and Penelope

The feast of St. Francis was celebrated today at a parish close to us. We do not normally attend this parish but decided, since ours didn't offer a blessing of the animals and we now have six wonderful animals whom we loved the idea of having blessed, to visit this parish . At first we were only going to take Clarissa and the puppies because Clancy has a tendency to become territorial of anywhere that he is .From time to time this territorial tendency manifests as aggression. Mike really wanted to include Clancy because he didn't want anyone to think Clarissa was an unwed mother and honestly I felt bad about excluding Clancy so we decided that he could go however he had to stay on a short leash. All went well and we got there but waited in the car until the service began to avoid any confrontation. Once it was time to start we got as far back out of the way as possible. To my surprise Clancy sat down like the perfect cocker spaniel should in church. He even laid down for a few minutes as the service went on. As is Clarissa's nature, after making sure that all the puppies were in the box, she also laid down. It was really peaceful. Then came the time for blessing. Father took the Holy water and the wand and started around to bless each animal. He blessed other dogs, cats, even a turtle. Finally he got to us. Clancy sat like a perfectly trained dog as Father approached him however when father shook the wand to sprinkle Holy water on him, Clancy was not sure what was happening. He so wanted to be good, but wasn't sure if he was going to be hit with the wand. He let out one bark before realizing that the Priest was moving on and that everything was OK. This one bark was enough to cause every human present to explode with laughter. In all my embarrassment I explained that that would be his AMEN. The priest then moved to Clarissa who just looked as though she had been caught in some rain. The puppies were each sprinkled and didn't seem phased at all. What a beautiful ceremony. It ended and we walked to our car amongst all the other owners and animals. Clancy proceeded to the car with the same perfectly trained dog behavior as he maintained during the service. Wow, I said to Mike and the kids when we were all in the car, Clancy was so good ! Yes we all agreed, The lord sure had his hand in this ! We now pray that God will always bless Clancy, Clarissa, Isabella, Ignatius, Masamora, and Penelope. Thank you God for our sweet Cocker Spaniels and thank you St. Francis for the gift of your day for us to receive this wonderful blessing of our family members.

I am embarrassed to admit that I did not get the priest's name but here he is reading the first reading.

Puppies' firsts

Saturday was a first bath for our almost four week old puppies. They have not spent much time out of the welping/ living box but that is just why they needed a bath since lets just say that they have to "Go" somewhere. They mostly did pretty well with it though I don't think any really enjoyed it. Here Izzy is being dried after her bath.

Her first paycheck

This morning I drove Cindy to the bank to cash and deposit ( most of it anyway) her first pay check into her bank account . For some reason the first deposit into this account came to mind. It was opened with money that she was given at her baptism. I can't believe that this account was opened seventeen years ago. Where has the time gone?
My second thought was the amount of money that she would have in there if I was adamant about making her save half of all birthday, Christmas, or other gifts of money. Unfortunately , I had caved in along the way and OK ed many purchases of toys and other junk that is now long gone. This realization made me a bit sad but then I remembered many times that I watched her play . I remembered how she used to make me cakes and cookies with her easy bake oven. I remember her carrying around dolls, putting on pretend make up and other things that little girls do. These memories made me thankful that I let her spend so much money. After all isn't happiness more important ?

Geauga Lake closing

Last May when I heard that Geauga Lake had removed two of it's best coasters from the park and placed one at Kings Island , which was bought by Cedar Fair who owns Geauga Lake. The thought that Geauga Lake would be closed for good crossed my mind but I figured that they would take a couple rides away every year and we would have another few seasons. I couldn't have been more wrong. My first indicator was when we went to Kings Island and one of their employees told Michael that they were going to get another couple of coasters and that Geauga Lake was going to solely be a water park. I thought this was just hear say and forgot about it , but sure enough the news was released last week. Geauga Lake as we knew it is gone. The water park will remain open next year( for how long is any one's guess) but all of the rides will be removed. This is so sad as ,though it is no Cedar Point, the park holds so many memories. I remember going the one and only time with my patents when I was in second grade. We went with some family friends and their extended family which included a girl that I went to school with but never knew that she was related to our friends. I remember that the highlight of the trip for me was being able to push this girl's twin brother and sister in their strollers. I got a hat which I kept for many years after and we rode the " needle " Not much of a trip by today's standards, but the chance of a lifetime back then. My most special memory of Geauga Lake is Mike taking me when we just started dating. We rode every ride, visited every water slide ( when the water park was nothing but a couple water slides squeezed into the ride side in the corner) and had a great time. He even won me a teddy bear. This very date was the one where I realized that he wanted a future with me . How can they close a park when all of these memories are there? Don't they realize? I guess that they are not as sappy as I am ! Anyway It saddens me that I will never take my grand kids there and tell my story. Luckily our kids have had season passes for the last five or so years and have some great memories of this park from the past. It is where they each rode their first coasters after ten trips through the line and changing their minds as it was loading time. I remember celebrating when each one of them finally boarded and went for their first ride. I guess that as the song says, for everything there is a season. I just hate to see this season end. On a happier note though our Amusement park days are not near over. We will still buy Cedar Fair passes and visit Cedar Point ,Kings island and probably Wild water Kingdom ( still open at Geauga Lake). You just can't keep Amusement park people down !

Masamora

Our sweet little puppy went to the vet yesterday. We expected the worst but were told that his problem will pretty much fix itself as long as we give him a little physical therapy. We will certainly do our best !

Cause for concern

As I mentioned in a previous post the boy puppies are not as quick to stand as the girls. I had hoped that this was just one of those things but as the puppies get older and we handle them more we have found cause for concern with Masamora. It appears that his chest is flatter than the others and sort of feels possibly deformed. This could explain why his legs are more at his side than under him like the other puppies. We knew going into this breeding that things could happen and at this point , though we have not seen a vet since their initial check up when all looked good, I fear that this poor puppy may not make it. I realize that he is just a puppy and that many people are facing many more difficult circumstances, but maybe if you could spare a prayer or two. My heart is breaking over this . I guess I am not cut out to breed dogs and am now thinking that we will never attempt this again. Thank you for your prayers

Puppies are almost three weeks

Clarissa's quad will be three weeks old tomorrow. They all seem to be doing well and are getting very big. Their eyes opened last week. The boys are getting pretty fast scooting on their bellies but the girls are starting to stand and take a few steps. Clarissa is spending more and more time away from them but they seem OK with it. Every once in awhile one will make a bit of noise that is so cute. Not a whimper nor a bark but sort of a combination of the two. The cutest thing was yesterday . Nelly ( the last born has been named Penelope) was sleeping when Cindy had a few minutes and decided to change the papers in their box. Since they have gotten older ( and make more of a mess) we have been taking them out of the box and setting them on the floor to clean their box. Anyway Cindy picked up Penelope which startled the sleeping puppy causing her to growl. I have never heard a puppy growl and it was such a cute sound, Poor thing. Here are a couple almost current pictures.

All four sleep in the box

I will post a picture of Izzy soon. she was sleeping when these were taken

TRE / Religious Education

TRE ( Total parish Religious Experience)/ religious education started the 2007-08 year at our parish today. Since many churches out there may still be doing CCD, I will explain that this is a newer concept to religious education. I think our parish has been doing it for about four or five years ( time flies when you are having fun ) now and a couple other parishes in our area started a few years before us. This is new and different in that the whole family attends the one session each month. It starts out with song and prayer then the children go to their classes which are much like the old CCD. Adults stay in the church and discuss the same topic that the kids are all talking about only on an adult level. Then at the conclusion the children come back , share what they have worked on, we sing and pray more and then are dismissed. This years theme is Follow the yellow brick road obviously from the wizard of Oz. In an attempt to start off with excitement we were visited by The cowardly lion who got his courage, The scarecrow who got his brain, and the tin man who got his heart. All in all it was an interesting day. One thing that the adults talked about are things that we are concerned about with our youth as well as things that we are proud of about our youth. We talked about different groups in which our kids are involved which are positive. Many people mentioned that their children had groups at school where they supported each other . Groups Where they could pray or discuss the bible.( yes in public schools) These all sounded well and good to me but something came to mind .Most of these children attend my Alma Matter which is in a very Christian area, most of which are Catholics. My children as well as a few others do not attend this school as we live in the surrounding areas and have chosen this parish not because it is the closest but because of various other reasons. As different parents spoke I couldn't help but think of something like this floating( or should I say not floating ) in my children's school district which is Catholic, Christian, Muslim, Jewish , Islam,American Indian, Jehovah witness as well as a few other religions. I kind of got lost in thought as to what could be done here. So we all have different beliefs, but I happen to know many of these people representing these different beliefs and most are wonderful people. Why is it that a primarily Catholic and Protestant school gets so much praise for having prayer groups when a bigger more diverse school has just as many great things going on but isn't acknowledged ? I thought about speaking what I was thinking but chose to keep my thoughts private for the time being. Maybe down the road I will feel comfortable speaking about my views on this issue. For now I will just say that I think that it would be a much better world if everyone in it would just see everyone else as the brothers and sisters that they are, regardless of what or who they believe in. Everything doesn't have to be Catholic or protestant or any other religion to be right. We are all God's people. There is no reason for anyone to worry about convincing anyone else to believe what they do. Instead how about we all get along and do some great things . After all isn't that what it is all about ?

Cindy's employer

Yesterday's post has landed a few Emails in my in box asking if this Veterinarian whom Cindy works for is the one running as an independent for president in 2008. As a matter of fact he is. Here is a link to his web site Donald K. Allen for President. Though winning as an independent is quite a task, it sure would be nice to have an average guy from the actual working class in office.

Cindy

An E mail informed me that I had neglected to mention anything about Cindy lately. As I believe I mentioned , she did not get the job at the veterinary clinic that we use ,which we thought she was going to be offered . She and her instructor were disappointed but did a mass mailing of resumes. Out of this she got an interview with another local Veterinarian . In the mean time though, she applied at a local nursing home for a nurses aid position. As it happened, she was offered both jobs. The nurses aid job paid a couple dollars more an hour but she would have to work Sundays , holidays, evenings and other inconvenient times. She ended up accepting the Veterinary assistant job. She worked two days last week and will work three this week. The school requires that she works sixteen hours per week and I think that is enough for right now. This seems to be working out well as she has early dismissal which enables her to work from twelve fifteen until closing time ( their last appointment is five o'clock) Some Saturdays she can get a full eight hours in. She seems to love the job and is getting all kinds of valuable experience. Thanks to all who prayed for her to get this job.God willing she will happily stay there.

Michael

Michael had a follow up visit with his surgeon today. Thank God, when his cast was taken off the swelling in his foot had went down quite a bit. The culture from around one pin came back as a strand of bacteria that is easily treated. The doctor did change his antibiotic to one more suited to fighting this particular stand. There was still swelling so there were no x rays taken but it is looking better than it did last week. Another cast was put on and hopefully all infection will be gone by next week. Please keep praying for his recovery.

ABOUT CLOTHES DRYERS (Thanks again Suzy)

The heating unit went out on my dryer! The gentleman that fixes things around the house for us told us that he wanted to show us something and he went over to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was clean.(I always clean the lint from the filter after every load clothes.) He told us that he wanted to show us something; he took the filter over to the sink, ran hot water over it. The lint filter is made of a mesh material -
I'm sure you know what your dryer's lint filter looks like.

WELL...the hot water just sat on top of the mesh! It didn't go through it at all! He told us that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh and that's what burns out the heating unit. You can't SEE the film , but it's there. It's what is in the dryer sheets to make your clothes soft and static free - that nice fragrance too, you know how they can feel waxy when you take them out of the box, well this stuff builds up on your clothes and on your lint screen This is also what causes dryer units to catch fire and potentially burn your house down with it! He said the best way to keep your dryer working for a very long time (and to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out and wash it with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush (or other brush) at least every six months. He said that makes the life of the dryer at least twice as long!

How about that? Learn something new everyday! I certainly didn't know dryer sheets would do that. So, I thought I'd share!

Note: I went to my dryer and tested my screen by running water on it. The water ran through a little bit but mostly collected all the water in the mesh screen. I washed it with warm soapy water and a nylon brush & I had it done in 30 seconds. Then when I rinsed it the water ran right Through the screen! There wasn't any puddling at all! That repairman knew what he was talking about!
From Diane:
Before Posting this I checked my dryer and sure enough Though not as severe,I had the same thing going on. I remember a few years back my sister in law's mother complaining that her dryer motor burned up , which she could not understand since she always emptied the lint trap after every load. I bet this was why. I used dish soap to scrub mine and the problem is no longer.

A few household tips ( Thanks Suzie)

1. Reheat Pizza Heat up leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove , set heat to med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza. I saw this on the cooking channel and it really works.
2. Easy Deviled Eggs Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up. Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg.Just throw bag away when done easy clean up.
3. Expanding Frosting When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat less sugar and calories per serving.
4. Reheating refrigerated bread To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated , place them in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster.
5. Newspaper weeds away Start putting in your plants, work the nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers put layers around the plants overlapping as you go cover with mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic they will not get through wet newspapers.
6 Broken Glass Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip to pick up the small shards of glass you can't see easily.
7. No More Mosquitoes Place a dryer sheet in your pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes away.
8. Squirrel Away! To keep squirrels from eating your plants sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and the
squirrels won't come near it.
9. Flexible vacuum To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.
10. Reducing Static Cling Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing pantyhose. Place pin in seam of slacks and -- ta da! -- static is gone.
11. Measuring Cups Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.
12. Foggy Windshield? Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth!
13. Reopening envelope If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Viola! It unseals easily
14. Conditioner Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's a lot cheaper than shaving cream ( Mine isn't but maybe yours is )and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up the conditioner you bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair...
15. Goodbye Fruit Flies To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass fill it 1/2" with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid , mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!
16. Get Rid of Ants Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it , take it "home", can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so,especially if it rains, but it works & you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!

Michael

Today was Michael's two week check up for his foot. the plaster cast came off to make way for the lighter fiberglass one but all did not go as smoothly as it sounds. It turns out that when the plaster cast came off there was a lot of swelling. The doctor questioned whether Michael had gotten the cast wet to which we both didn't think so . I verbalized that there was so much bleeding after surgery that I thought that is where the moisture came from. The doctor didn't think that this was the case but didn't debate it. Michael was given a prescription for Augmentin and to be safe blood was drawn and a culture was taken around one of the pins , to pinpoint what exactly was causing the infection. The doctor seemed nervous about this little problem but told us that by next week the infection should be under control and then we would take x rays and all the things that should have been done this week. Please keep this situation in your prayers. I realize that infection happens and antibiotics will take care of it but the doctor's nervousness has me a biting my nails. Thankfully God is in control and will take care of everything.

Vet update

Our puppies are now dew claw less and their tails have been cropped. The vet has checked them all and labels them " fat healthy cocker pups". They did well with these procedures and didn't even whimper as much as I expected. Clarissa also did well with the hour separation, though to minimize her anxiety we took her out to the waiting room where it was harder for her to hear them and sat there till they were done so she wouldn't have to stress about coming home without them. In the end all was well and they didn't seem to have any pain at all once home. The puppies will go back to the vet again in four weeks for fecal checks then will start shots at six weeks. I have also finished their paperwork for registration and will send it in this afternoon or tomorrow morning. For now it is time to take Mom and Dad out then come back and pet the little beauties.

Five days old already !

Today is tail docking day so I wanted to post a few " with tail" pictures.

Clarissa looked on as we took each one out of the box and photographed them.

Notice her nose in the one below.

Here is the first born female. We have been calling her Isabella or Izzy for short

Here is the second born with two white tipped paws and a white tipped tail. Due to the tipped tail he has been known as dip stick

The third born black boy is known as Iggy, short for Ignatius, or Masonore ( however it is spelled) who is the patron saint of Karate.

The last born little girl is just referred to as awwwwww. This is exactly the color of Clancy when he was a pup.

Taco Bell .49 sale

Though I had planned on wings while at home watching the Pittsburgh @ Cleveland game yesterday, I seen a sign at Taco Bell which changed my mind. Taco Bell is currently running a forty nine cent hard taco sale on Sundays. Though not all stores are participating, it is worth checking out in your area.

Angelica with Real Live Cynthia !

Answering a couple E mails.

My life seems to be full of puppy related things right now, but in an effort not to bore anyone, I thought I would answer some questions that have shown up in my E mail lately but have not yet been answered. The first few are puppy questions. I guess that I neglected to mention the puppies sexes past the birth announcement. Yes Clarissa has no problem with us touching them and we have examined them. It turns out that we have two males and two females. The funny thing is that the black ones, like Mommy are males and the buff ( and red) ones are females, like Daddy.

Question number two is do we plan on keeping any or all ? We are not real sure of this one yet. The original plan was that since Cindy is seventeen she would be allowed to keep one for which she is responsible . This one would go with her when she moves out. ( no immediate plans but probably before she is thirty five or so) This one really depends on a few things. The biggest being whether we plan to let Clancy and Clarissa mate again. Honestly, though Clarissa did a great job and seems to be a great Mom, I am not sold on many more , if any matings . Mike , on the other hand, would love to have a couple more litters. Not every year, mind you, but maybe another in a couple years. I guess we will just see how it goes. Of course they are so cute that maybe we will keep all of them. Six dogs aren't really too many..... right?

Question number three is non puppy... well kind of. How did Cindy's job interview with Dr Allen go? It was on Wednesday( The puppies' birthday) and it went well. She interviewed with the office manager and then was told that she would talk to Dr. Allen himself. She was ushered into a surgical scrub room and was washed up. She was then taken into the surgical suite where she met Dr Allen and chatted with him during a spay . I guess that he just wanted to see how she would handle this aspect of the job. All went pretty well and she got called for a second interview coming up next Friday. It sounds like this interview may include an orientation as she was told to wear scrubs. Please keep the prayers going. If this doesn't work out, Cindy has also received a call for an interview for a Nurses aid. Though this job pays over nine dollars an hour. Cindy would rather work for a little over minimum wage with animals. We have handed this one over to God and will let him decide.

Question number four, the last on my mind now concerns My Mom and Grandma. Mom is doing well. She is still recovering but looks great ( except for the huge incision down her neck) the doctor is thrilled that she doesn't seem to have any nerve damage at all even though he told us after surgery that he doubted that she would ever talk again.Praise God she talked to us as soon as we seen her in recovery. The lord really has carried her through this.
Also Grandma was adjusting to the rehab at the nursing home well, but seems to have contracted pneumonia. She is not bad enough for the hospital but at ninety years old, this sort of thing can be very serious. Again, please join us in prayer.
I also heard last night that Mike's Grandmother is in the hospital in North Carolina where she was spending some time with Mike's aunt. I am not sure what is going on as all Mike told me was that she was getting dizzy. I will have Mike call his aunt tonight and try to find out more but in the meantime please add her to the prayer list.

I think I have almost covered the most asked questions but feel free to E mail or use the comment section if you wish. It may take me awhile but I will get back to you !

puppies pupppies, puppies

Clarissa and her quads are doing well. They have all been quietly nursing or sleeping for the most part. The only cries that have been heard on a regular basis are Clancy's when Clarissa decides that it looks as though he may be thinking of coming near the puppies( mind you I said thinking. He has been in another room when she decides this), springs from the box growls, snaps at him, or worse yet latches onto his ear. Poor Clancy.. Doggy Daddy's really don't have any rights. This scenario is not liked by the quad either as Clarissa doesn't care if they are nursing, sleeping on her legs, or what they are doing when she feels the need to spring into action. The first couple times she did this they all cried but have since gotten used to it.
Through this whole ordeal we have also had daily contact with the veterinarian who says that all sounds great and that he will see us Monday for tail docking and dew claw removals. Before then I want to get a couple pictures with tails as they are so cute. I have debated on skipping the tail docking but that probably isn't one of my better ideas.Today is also the day that I have promised to fill out their preregistration papers, so that if I don't keep them all ( yea right ) their new owners can get them registered easily.

We got puppies

At twelve forty five PM today Clarissa delivered puppy number one a cute little buff cocker spaniel in Michael's closet. Luckily I caught on as to why she was hiding and moved her to her box in the living room . There at one forty one PM she delivered number two, who is black with two white feet and a white stripe on it's belly. Two thirty one PM brought number three, a solid black cutie, followed by the last, number four,a reddish brown ( Clancy's color) beauty at three twenty nine. I am not positive of the sexes yet due to Clarissa doing all of the work while I only observed close by. She did let Mike and I close and we were able to move a couple here and there but we did not push things. Below are their first photographs. they are not award winning but you can get an idea.

Our four baby cockers
born 9/5/07

Clarissa cleans the last baby while the other three climb over her hind legs

I can't beleive I passed on the chance.

Due to Clarissa being so close to delivering her puppies, and many other factors that are making my blood pressure rise to an almost unsafe number, Mike and I have decided not to purchase the Cleveland Brown's VS Pittsburgh Steeler's tickets for this coming Sunday's game. Hopefully we will have another chance someday. Somethings are just more important than others.

No puppies yet.

Clarissa has been in stage one labor since yesterday. It shouldn't be too much longer which is a good thing as I am not sure how much more my nerves can take.
Who's bright idea was mating her anyway?
Breathe Diane breathe !!!!!!

No Clancy.... it's Clarissa's welping box

No stress here !

Almost ready to deliver !

First day of the 07/08 school year

Despite my nervousness ( you would think it wouldn't bother me anymore) this morning went off without a problem.Even Michael made it to his bus with a plaster non weight bearing cast on his right foot / leg and an air cast on the other. He is using his crutches today but we have discussed him going in his wheel chair if the crutches all day prove to be too much. Robby seemed pretty calm for this being his first day of middle school. Now they are all gone and I am setting in silence. OK not total silence as Clarissa is sleeping at my feet and Clancy is on guard dog duty, but husband and kid free silence. It has been months since I have experienced such quiet. There are so many things that I should be doing right now but I think I will just relax and enjoy the silence for awhile. Why not? Things have waited this long, what is another day? If anyone asks I am on break.

You know that you are getting old.....

When you live in North Eastern Ohio, an equal distance between Cleveland and Pittsburgh, have an opportunity to purchase Steeler's VS Brown's tickets ,but hesitate because you worry how far away you will have to park and walk to the stadium.

You wonder if it is worth it or if you are better off just to order wings from the Lube ( where else can you get wings ?) and watch the game at home.
I'm still debating .

I failed this one

Maybe I should attend Beer School , with Mike, at Geauga Lake's Octoberfest this year
